If you are hosting a musical event or party then dancers can be a fun addition to liven things up. Dancing has been practised for centuries throughout civilisation initially as a form of worship and gradually as a social form of expression.

There are many different forms of dancing to suit different occasions. To help you choose the right style to set the mood here is a description of some popular dance styles.

Salsa

Salsa DancingThe name salsa literally translates into sauce. In the dancing context this relates to salsas fiery attitude and flavour expressed through hot dance moves.

Unlike classical dance forms (such as ballroom dancing) salsa is a spot dance. In salsa dancing dancers stick to one area of the dance floor instead of gradually circulating round.

Salsa is also different from other forms of classical dancing as it doesn't require people to dance in pairs. Salsa dancers can dance alone or with partners making it an excellent choice for entertainment in groups or solo bookings to provide brief tuition and taster sessions at a party or event.

Jive

Jive is a Latin form of dancing that is popular in ballroom dancing. Jive dancing has origins from African American culture which emerged during the 1940s. Jive has developed from swing dancing and has picked up its own unique style along the way.

Jive dancing can be enjoyed socially or competitively making it a versatile form to adapt for parties. In competitions jive is danced to music at a pace of forty four beats per minute. For social events it is usually at a more leisurely pace of between thirty to forty beats per minute.

Break Dancing

Break DancingIf you are looking for a more contemporary twist for your party then break dancing is a great choice. Break dancing is recognized as one of the four elements of hip hop and is great for a hip hop themed or kids party.

Although breaking (as it is otherwise known) has origins dating back to the early hip hop scene it is a versatile and adaptable dance form. Due to its athletic nature breaking moves can be adapted to other forms of music with great effect. Easy to attempt almost impossible to master breaking is a fun addition to any party.

Break dancing allegedly originated as a peaceful way for disputing gangs to settle their differences. This can be seen in some of the more confrontational moves that are often performed in competitions. During these competitions credit is often given for creative stances and linking moves as well as the individual techniques.
