Kids parties are all about having lots of fun! What better way is there of having fun than playing games? Games are an easy to plan, cost effective way of including everyone at your party. The following is a list of some classic party games for children.

Piñata

PinataPiñata is a traditional Mexican party game that was created by Spanish settlers in Mexico. Like most of the best party games its appeal rests in its simplicity. All you need to play is a piņata, a stick and some material to make blindfolds.

Piñatas are large models made from papier-mâché or other breakable materials that are filled with sweets or toys. At a party or celebration piñatas are hung from a tree branch or ceiling just above head height. Players then cue up and take turns to hit the piñata with a stick whilst wearing blindfolds. If they can break open the piñata they win the contents.

Part of the appeal of piñatas is the designs. They are usually brightly coloured in amusing shapes. Traditional designs resemble people and animals (particularly) donkeys. Nowadays all kinds of designs can be made to order such as cartoon characters and caricatures.

Musical chairs

Musical chairs is a fun game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. All you need to play is some music, a group of people and some chairs. The game starts with chairs arranged in two rows facing back to back. You need one less chair then the number of people playing (so if ten people are playing you would have nine chairs).

When the game starts everyone stands near the chairs and the music starts playing. While the music is playing everyone walks around the chairs in the same direction. After a minute or two the music stops playing and everyone has to sit down in a chair. As there is one chair short one person will be left without a chair and they are knocked out.

After the person who is knocked out leaves the game another chair is removed and the game continues until there is one chair left. The last two remaining players have a final round to see who gets the last chair and is declared the winner.

Pass the parcel

Pass the parcel is a fun party game that has been played for generations. One of the keys to pass the parcels success is its simplicity. As it is easy to learn it is the perfect game for children of all ages to enjoy.

All you need to play is a group of players, a parcel and some music. The parcel is wrapped in multiple layers of wrapping paper. One player (usually a parent) will get all the children to sit in a circle. The game starts when the parent hands the parcel to one of the children. At the same time the music starts to play and the child passes the parcel to the next child either side of them.

The parcel is then continued to be passed in a circle until the parent stops the music. When the music stops whoever has the parcel holds onto it and removes a layer of wrapping paper. They then pass the parcel on to the next person in the same order and continue until all the layers of wrapping paper have been removed. Whoever removes the last layer of paper and uncovers the parcels wins and gets to keep it.

What makes the game fun is that it can be customised. In between layers you can put treats and small prizes like sweets for people to find. Another popular variation is to put mottos or slogans for people to read or forfeits to perform. This helps to make the game a little less predictable as you don't know if your going to get a challenge or a prize.
